BACKSTORY 01: THE ORIGINAL VERSION OF MY BOOK "NO"

                                    

My picture book "No" was published in 2011 (Ed.Oceano). It took a lot of time in the making. With the help and wise opinion from people I love and trust, it ended up being a book I cherish and that kids and librarians adore. Things I like from this book: the rythm, the suspense, the little bear child's voice, the journey.  I'm sharing some of the steps in the making of "No" in here.

These were the first thumbnails for the book. At that time, the title was "IN", since I my. original intention was to pair it with another book about a mole who wanted to leave his home underground and it was called OUT.

This book hasn't found a publishing house yet, but it was the reason why I made the book called "No".

This is a video of one of the first dummies for the book and the one I sent to publishers for consideration. This version is very close to the thumbnails. The story is also very similar to the final book, except for the design of the spreads, more economy on the text and the final line which made it a much better book.

In the final version, I began to add the snow fall from the beginning and gradually add the snow on every page. Also, I decided to add an owl, as a reference to the coming of the night.

I placed this scene of little bear playing on page 5 of the thumbnails. On the final version, it became the opening scene and the mother only appears in the text. She interrupts that very special moment for the little bear saying it's time to sleep. I also decided to add the last leaf of Autumn and a couple of snowflakes to announce the beginning of Winter.

My book "No" has been translated into seven different languages including French, English, Italian, Chinese, Japanese and Portuguese.

The Italian edition of my book NO was the recipient of the Nati Per Leggere (Born to Read) Award. This award aims to support the best editorial production for preschoolers in Italy. It was also a CCBC choice in 2011 and it got Booklist Starred Review.

Alternative endings for No

First grade children create a new ending for the French edition of my book "No" (ed. Rue du Monde).  Many thanks to Pierre for making this a creative and beautiful experience.

Un tendre bras de fer entre la fougue de la jeunesse et la sagesse de l'âge.
A travers la désobéissance d'un ourson qui ne veut pas aller se coucher, Claudia Rueda joue sur les dangereuses similitudes de l'enfouissement, l'ensevelissement, l'étouffement, l'entêtement et l'enlacement.
Dès l'âge de 2 ans, il y aura un réel plaisir à s'engouffrer dans ces pages neigeuses, à la suite du petit plantigrade kamikaze au regard profond comme le sol qui se dérobe sous ses pattes. Le graphisme est d'une rondeur stylée, et le texte, vif et simple, un tendre bras de fer entre la fougue de la jeunesse et la sagesse de l'âge.

L'obstination d'un ourson et la patience d'une mère devant la résistance de son enfant.

Que c'est dur d'obéir toujours à ses parents! Qu'il est dur d'aller se coucher, surtout pour la longue nuit de l'hibernation qui attend le petit ours frondeur du délicieux album de Claudia Rueda. Sur le thème de l'opposition parent/enfant, nous suivons, au milieu d'un paysage de plus en plus enneigé, l'obstination d'un ourson et la patience d'une mère devant la résistance de son enfant. Et cet enfant ira jusqu'au bout, trop loin peut être, créant ainsi un suspens effrayant dans les dernières pages de cet album très réussi.

Sans Connivence

...le besoin vital de s'opposer pour mieux grandir.

A 2 ou 3 ans, on se sent si fort qu'on veut n'en faire qu'à sa tête... Quitte à s'offrir une belle frayeur! L'auteur et illustratrice de ce livre est une colombienne qui, après des études de droit et d'art et la pratique de la caricature politique, signe quelques beaux livres pour les enfants. Le style est direct, le message clair sans être pesant et l'album se révèle tendre et cotonneux sur le besoin vital de s'opposer pour mieux grandir.

Entre le désir d'indépendance et le besoin de sécurité

Un très joli album qui parle des tiraillements du petit enfant, pris entre son désir d'indépendance et son besoin de sécurité. Le texte est simple et court pour laisser place à un graphisme très épuré, rendant bien l'ambiance de l'hiver.

A l'âge du "non!"

Une métaphore qui touche les petits, pleine de tendresse et d'amour. Écrite avec sensibilité, elle aborde l'envie de liberté, d'emancipation et la protection parentale avec justesse. A l'âge du "non!", cet album délicieux est un plaisir à partager avec les enfants blottis contre soi.
