BACKSTORY 04: BUNNY OVERBOARD STORYBOARDS

Bunny Overboard is the third of an interactive books series I published by Chronicle Books. The reader takes part in the development of the story by shaking the book to make waves, blowing to bring the wind for the sails and touching creatures under the ocean.

I created several storyboards and thumbnails for this book, so the consequences of the interaction with the reader would be clear and the story would develop smoothly. You can see the final art from the blowfish scene bellow.

In these two spreads from the book, the blowfish inflates after the reader pats it in the previous page when asked by the narrator.

This sequence of Bunny climbing to the boat didn't end up being in the book. Editing is more an act of trimming than adding.

The jump scene in the storyboard and the the final images for the book.

Hungry Bunny is a 2019 Bank Street College Best Book

From their website: In choosing books for the annual list, reviewers consider literary quality and excellence of presentation as well as the potential emotional impact of the books on young readers. Other criteria include credibility of characterization and plot, authenticity of time and place, age suitability, positive treatment of ethnic and religious differences, and the absence of stereotypes. Each book accepted for the list is read and reviewed by at least two committee members and then discussed by the committee as a whole.

Hungry Bunny in Dutch and Korean

It's  always a treat to see my books published in languages I cannot read. The Dutch and Korean editions of Hungry Bunny are already out. Uitgeverij Gottmer is the publisher of the dutch edition and Pauline Kim of the Korean edition. I love the pink colour on that one.

A SLJ starred review for Hungry Bunny

«“A first choice for libraries.” –School Library Journal, starred review

This interactive adventure invites readers to assist a very hungry Bunny with a “tummy rumble” as he gathers apples to take home. Large font instructions in colorfully contrasting red text plead with children to “shake” apples and “blow” leaves from a tree, while a helpful attached ribbon of a scarf allows readers to “grab,” “place,” “hold,” and eventually “make a bridge” while assisting Bunny. The way home is filled with additional instructions, propelling Bunny’s wagon faster as children tilt, rock, and turn the book to move him along toward home—just in time to pop through a hole and add apples to Mom’s homemade pie. The simplicity of cartoon images enhanced by graphite pencil shading with minimal use of bold color allows the easy identification of Bunny’s actions, expressions, and important objects on the page. Text separated on facing pages emphasizes action words and invites readers to follow Bunny’s activity through turning ¬pages. VERDICT This engaging title encourages listening, identification of events in the story, and interactivity. A first choice for libraries.

Turkish Bunny

I just saw the cover for the Turkish edition of Bunny Slopes. Google translates the title as "Skier Rabbit", which sounds really cute.

School Library Journal talks Bunny Slopes

Rueda scores another win with this adorable offering that’s perfect for one-on-one and small group sharing.

Cute cartoon Bunny is ready to hit the bunny slopes. Skis on and red scarf knotted, Bunny needs help from his readers to complete his adventure. Large, conversational text greets readers and asks them to join in the fun. First, they are asked to “shake” the book to produce snow and then “tap tap tap” the book to pack it down, followed by “tilt,” “turn,” “jump,” and so forth. The action words are in red, matching Bunny’s jaunty red scarf on the opposite pages. Eventually, Bunny skis into a hole (an actual die-cut hole through three pages of the book) and falls. His mom then greets Bunny with a warm bowl of food and takes him to their den to rest. Only two colors, light blue and bright red, are used, with charcoal lines against a white backdrop. The premise is simple, skiing down a slope, but it is the interaction between the book and readers that makes for a special experience. If the title is read with a small audience, each action could be played out for interactive fun. VERDICT Rueda scores another win with this adorable offering that’s perfect for one-on-one and small group sharing.
